2. What Burial customs often represent:
a. Love and devotion.
b. Respect and honour.
JEWISH BURIAL
“That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid. Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.”
Luke 23:54-56
1. The Preparation
a. Preparation for Burial.
b. This can be quite elaborate.
c. But there was hardly any time to prepare the body of the Lord Jesus for burial.
2. The Sabbath drew near.
a. The Sabbath was given priority.
b. The people were bound by the Sabbath Law and thus, there was hardly any preparation for the burial of the Lord Jesus.
c. This was heart-breaking for those who loved the Lord Jesus! They could not prepare His burial as they would like!
3. The Plans of the women from Galilee.
a. They followed the procession to the tomb of Joseph Arimathea.
b. They observed:
i. The location of the tomb.
ii. How the body was laid.
c. Preparation was made
i. Spices
ii. Fragrant oils
iii. They had to rest because it was the Sabbath!
