My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 24: 21-24
THE STORY TOLD BY THE TWO DISCIPLES II
“But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
Luke 24:21-24
1. The Hope of the Disciples of the Lord Jesus.
a. They had hoped that He would redeem Israel.
b. Their hope was in part, political.
i. Israel did not like to be ruled by Rome.
ii. They hoped that the Lord Jesus would set up His Kingdom as David did.
2. The death of the Lord Jesus.
a. This had badly shaken the faith and hope of the disciples.
b. Their hope for the redemption of Israel was now dashed.
c. The disciples were mistaken in their understanding of redemption.
i. The focus was not political.
ii. The focus was spiritual and eternal.
3. The testimony of the women disciples.
a. They had gone to the tomb of the Lord Jesus early in the morning.
b. They came to an empty tomb.
c. They had seen angels of God telling them that the Saviour had risen from the dead.
4. The men disciple.
a. Peter was mentioned in Luke 24:12.
b. Another disciple was with Peter.
c. In appropriate humility, he did not disclose his name.
John was the other disciple who ran with Peter to the tomb (John 20:8).
d. They confirmed that the tomb of the Lord Jesus was indeed empty.
e. They did not see the body of the Lord Jesus.
