My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 24: 46-49
EXPLAINING THE SCRIPTURES
“Then He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.’”
Luke 24:46-47
1. We have a summary of what the Lord Jesus taught His Disciples.
a. Two things are closely related:
i. “Thus it is written”
ii. “Thus it was necessary”
b. The focus was the Lord Jesus Christ.
i. It was necessary for the Lord Jesus to suffer.
ii. It was also necessary for Him to rise on the third day.
2. Repentance and remission of sins.
a. This message must be preached
i. Repentance from sin.
ii. Forgiveness of sins.
b. The name of the Lord Jesus.
i. The name of the Lord Jesus is to be proclaimed to all nations.
ii. The starting point is Jerusalem.
c. The message of repentance and remission of sins.
i. It was what John the Baptiser and the Lord Jesus had preached earlier.
ii. This time round, it is to be preached with reference to the Lord Jesus as the One who can and will forgive sins.
BEARING WITNESS FOR THE LORD JESUS
“And you are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
Luke 24:48-49
1. The role of the Disciples.
a. They had been taught by the Lord Jesus.
b. They had seen the Risen Saviour.
c. They had the unique role of being witnesses for the Risen Lord.
2. The Promise of God the Father.
a. The Lord Jesus would send to the Disciples the Promise of God the Father.
b. This is a reference to the Holy Spirit.
c. The Disciples would be endued with power from God on high.
