Text: Luke 4: 16-17

IN THE CITY OF NAZARETH

1. This was the hometown of

a. Joseph and Mary.

b. This was home to the whole family.

2. Going away for a little while

a. The Lord Jesus went to the River Jordan where He was baptised (anointed. by John the Baptiser.

b. The Spirit of God had come upon Him in His fulness.

i. The Lord Jesus was fully empowered.

ii. He began His public ministry.

3. Returning to Nazareth

a. He was brought up in Nazareth. Luke 4:16a

b. He went to the local synagogue as was His usual custom. Luke 4:16b

c. He stood up to read the Scriptures. Luke 4:16c

4. At the synagogue

a. The book of Isaiah was handed to Him. Luke 4:17

b. The Book of Isaiah

i. It is a very difficult book.

ii. It has many chapters.

iii. Many would not be able to read this book well.

5. The response of the Lord Jesus

a. He was familiar with this book.

b. He knew how to read and interpret this book.

6. Reading Isaiah

a. The Lord Jesus read this portion of Scripture (Luke 4:18-19).

b. This was taken from Isaiah 61:1-2.
