Text: Luke 4: 18-19

PROPHECY OF THE ANOINTING OF THE MESSIAH

1. Several meanings may be found in the Anointing of the Messiah:

a. To set apart

b. To sanctify

c. To seal and to confirm

d. To empower

2. The Lord Jesus read from Isaiah 61:1-2 and He applied this prophecy to Himself.

a. “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me “(Luke 4:18a)

i. This was a reference to His anointing.

ii. This explains the significance of His baptism (anointing).

b. “Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor” (Luke 4:18b)

i. There were many who were poor.

ii. The Lord Jesus would reach out to them with the Gospel.

c. “He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted” (Luke 4:18c)

i. Life was harsh for many.

ii. Many hearts were broken (affected adversely)

d. “To proclaim liberty to the captives” (Luke 4:18d)

i. This is not a literal reference to those who are in jail.

ii. This text covers those who are enslaved by sin and by Satan.

iii. True liberty may be found in the gospel of the Lord Jesus.

e. “And recovery of sight to the blind” (Luke 4:18e)

i. There were some who were physically blind.

ii. There were many more who were spiritually blind.

iii. The Lord Jesus had come to restore sight (literally and figuratively).

f. “To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” (Luke 4:18f)

i. The Lord Jesus had come not to judge and condemn.

ii. He had come to say that the Lord would receive all who would come to Him in humble repentance.

iii. The word “acceptable” means “favourable”.

iv. God would grant His grace and favour through the gospel proclaimed by the Lord Jesus Christ.

i．主耶稣来不是要审判和定罪

iii．这词“悦纳”的意思是“有恩惠的”

iv．上帝会通过主耶稣基督所宣告的福音赐予祂的恩典和恩惠
