Text: Luke 5: 36-39
TWO SHORT PARABLES
1. The Lord Jesus was a Master-Teacher.
2. One of the most effective skills He had was to teach by using Parables (Luke 5:36).
a. It could be a short story.
b. It could even be an imagery employed skilfully.
PATCH OF A NEW GARMENT ON AND OLD ONE Luke 5:36
1. The Jews were very thrifty in the early days.
2. Garments are repaired many times till it is impossible to patch up.
3. But new patches cannot be used on old garments.
4. When washed, it will shrink and cause an even greater tear on the old garment.
5. The scribes and Pharisees are like old garments (their religious system).
6. The teachings of the Lord Jesus are like the new cloth. It cannot be used to patch an old garment.
7. It will cause an even greater tear.
WINES AND WINESKINS
1. They did not have bottles in the first century.
2. Grapes are pressed and the juice is put into wineskins.
3. They become wine that is served at lunch and dinner.
4. Wine was safer to drink than water in those days.
OLD WINESKINS AND NEW WINE
1. Wineskins begin as new.
2. With time and usage, they become old wineskins.
3. New wine should not be put into old wineskins.
4. The fermentation process can be very vigorous and may burst the old wineskin.
5. The meaning of this Parable (Luke 5:36-37):
a. The teachings of the Lord Jesus are like new wine.
b. Fresh, clear and vigorous.
c. The scribes and Pharisees and their fixed ideas were like old wineskins.
d. These cannot be mixed.
The wine would be spilt and wasted when the wineskin bursts.
