Text: Luke 6: 6-11

THE SABBATH ISSUE

1. The scribes and Pharisees were steeply “traditionalists”.

2. They had their own interpretation as to what the Sabbath stood for.

3. Their understanding of the Sabbath was:

a. Rigid
b. Mechanical
c. Legalistic

MANY WERE AFRAID OF THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES

1. They regarded themselves as custodians of their religion.

2. There was a Council called “The Great Sanhedrin”.

a. They had judicial authority.
b. They also had religious authority.

3. The Lord Jesus was totally unafraid of His opponents.

IN A SYNAGOGUE ON ANOTHER SABBATH

1. The Lord Jesus taught at the synagogue.

2. In the synagogue was a man with a withered right hand.

3. The scribes and Pharisees were watching the Lord Jesus intently.

a. Would the Lord heal the man on a Sabbath?
b. They were planning to accuse Him if He did (Luke 6:7).

KNOWING THEIR THOUGHTS

1. The Lord Jesus knew the scribes and Pharisees.

a. He knew their thoughts (Luke 6:8a..
b. He knew what they were seeking to do.

2. He was going to surprise the scribes and Pharisees.

a. He spoke to the man with the withered hand.
“Arise and stand here”
Luke 6:8b
b. The man obeyed the Lord Jesus.
“He arose and stood”
Luke 6:8c

3. The Lord Jesus then addressed all in the synagogue:

a. The worshippers
b. The scribes and the Pharisees
c. He posed a question to all.
“I will ask you one thing:
Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil,
To save life or to destroy?”
Luke 6:9

4. What possible answer could anyone give?

a. Of course, it was lawful to do good.
i. On any day.
ii. Especially on the Sabbath.
b. Of course, it was lawful to save life rather than to destroy.
i. Every day.
ii. Including the Sabbath.

5. Nobody answered the question posed. It was obvious what the answer was.

6. The Lord Jesus then proceeded to heal the man with the withered right hand.

a. “Stretch out your hand.” (Luke 6:10a)
b. “And his hand was restored as whole as the other.” (Luke 6:10b)

THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES

1. They were filled with rage (Luke 6:11a).

2. They discussed what they could do to the Lord Jesus (Luke 6:11b).

a. Their thoughts were totally negative.
b. They were frustrated that they could not get the better of the Lord Jesus.

4. 他们能给出什么答案?

a. 当然,行善是合法的
i. 不管那一天
ii. 尤其是在安息日
b. 当然,救命而不是害生命是合法的
i. 每天
ii. 包括安息日

5. 没有人回答主耶稣提出的问题。答案很明显

6. 主耶稣接着医治那枯干右手的人
