Text: Luke 9: 23-24

TRULY FOLLOWING THE LORD JESUS

1. There were many who were “following the Lord Jesus”.

2. What were some of their reasons for following Him?

a. That they might be healed:
i. From illnesses
ii. From problems
iii. From the power of demons
b. All who came to the Lord Jesus.
i. They were healed.
ii. They listened to His teachings.
iii. But few made the commitment to truly follow Him.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TRULY FOLLOW THE LORD JESUS?

1. Desire

There must be a true desire to follow the Lord Jesus (Luke 9:23a).

2. Denial of self:

a. There must also be denial of self to follow (Luke 9:23b).
b. We cannot give in to sin and the world,

3. Determination to take up his cross.

a. The “cross” is a symbol of suffering (Luke 9:23c).
b. We must not be afraid of suffering for the Lord.

4. Definite commitment to follow the Lord.

a. It takes commitment to follow the Lord Jesus (Luke 9:23d).
b. This commitment must be a strong and definite one.

THOSE WHO ARE AFRAID OF FOLLOWING THE LORD

1. Many prefer to “save their life” (Luke 9:24a).

a. They are more concerned about themselves than about the Lord.
b. They will not risk anything for the Lord.

2. These are not prepared to “lose their life” for the Lord Jesus.

a. They will not accept suffering of any kind.
b. They think that they would then save their lives.

3. A paradox

a. Those who try and save their lives would lose it.
b. Those who risk their lives would save it (Luke 9:24).
