My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 9: 46-48
AN UNNECESSARY DISPUTE
1. The Disciples did not always get along well with each other.
a. They had their own personalities.
b. They had their own thoughts and ideas.
c. They did not see eye-to-eye with each other at times.
2. A Dispute arose
a. The issue of greatness.
“As to which of them would be greatest.”
Luke 9:46
b. Why were they even discussing this thought at all?
c. Each thought of himself as “great”.
THE PERCEPTION OF THE LORD JESUS
1. He knew what their thoughts were.
2. In fact, He knew what was in their heart (Luke 9:47a).
a. They were thinking of greatness after the death of the Lord.
b. They would not compare themselves to the Lord Jesus, of course.
A SPECIAL LESSON TO BE LEARNED
1. He took a little child and set him next to Himself (Luke 9:47b).
2. He spoke to His disciples directly.
a. Receiving of the child.
“Whoever receives this little child in My name receives Me”
Luke 9:48a
b. Receiving the Lord Jesus.
“Whoever receives Me, receives Him who sent Me.”
Luke 9:48b
3. How significant is the act of receiving a child?
a. Nobody would think that this is very significant.
b. But there is more to what the Lord Jesus said simply.
i. To receive a child in the Lord Jesus’ name is to receive the Saviour Himself.
ii. To receive the Saviour is to receive God the Father Himself.
iii. This would be considered “great!”
4. The lesson to be mastered.
“He who is least among you all will be great.”
Luke 9:48c
a. This is a deep paradox.
i. If one wants to be “great”.
ii. He must be “least”.
b. The focus should not be on oneself.
i. The focus should be on God.
ii. The Lord Jesus
iii. And a humble ministry.
This would be true greatness!
iii.
ii.
iii.
