My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 9: 49-50
AN UNCALLED-FOR APPLICATION OF AUTHORITY
1. There were times when the Disciples were on their own.
2. The Lord Jesus had much work to do on His own.
3. The Apostle John approached the Lord Jesus and gave a brief report of what they did.
MEETING A MAN ON THE ROAD
1. They had come across a man.
a. He was casting out demons.
b. He was doing this in the name of the Lord Jesus.
c. He was not one of the known Disciples.
2. What they said to the man.
a. They forbade the man:
i. From using the Lord’s name.
ii. From his ministry of casting out demons.
b. The Disciples expected the Lord Jesus:
i. To approve of what they did.
ii. Perhaps even to praise them.
THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD JESUS
1. The Lord Jesus did not praise them.
2. They had to learn a deep lesson.
a. They were not to forbid the man from serving the Lord effectively.
b. He was able to cast out demons and thus must have been empowered by God.
3. An important principle learned
“He who is not against us, is on our side.”
Luke 9:50
a. The man may not be one of the known Disciples.
b. But the Apostles did not know all of the Disciples of the Lord Jesus.
i. The man had not spoken against the Lord.
ii. He was doing a good thing, casting out demons.
iii. He was on the side of the Lord.
c. A wrong application of authority.
i. The Apostles had not consulted with the Lord.
ii. They had acted on their own understanding.
iii. They had to realise that they had been wrong.
