Text: Luke 9: 54-56

THE APPOINTING OF THE APOSTLES

1. This was noted in Luke 6:12-16.

2. This was also noted in Mark 3:13-19.

3. In Mark’s account, there was an additional note:

a. Concerning James and John.

b. They were called the “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17).

THE SONS OF THUNDER IN ACTION

1. When the Samaritan village refused them passage James and John reacted strongly.

2. They said to the Lord Jesus Christ.

a. James and John cited Elijah the prophet.

i. The nickname of Elijah was “The prophet of fire”.

ii. Wicked enemies were slain by fire on 2 instances (2 Kings 1:9-12).

b. They asked if they could call down fire from heaven too?

“Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”

CORRECTING THE SONS OF THUNDER

1. They had to learn more about themselves.

“You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.”

Luke 9:55a

a. They still had much to learn and to change.

b. The authority and power given to them was not for destruction!

c. They were wrong to be so angry and to desire to destroy the Samaritans.

2. The Lord Jesus’ Ministry

a. The Lord had not come to destroy lives (Luke 9:56a).

b. He came to save lives (Luke 9:56b).

LEAVING THE HOSTILE SAMARITAN VILLAGE

1. The Lord Jesus took another route rather than take a confrontational stance.

2. The hostile village was the poorer because they had rejected the Lord Jesus Christ.

b．赋予他们的权柄和权力不是为了毁灭！

c．他们如此愤怒并想要消灭撒马利亚人是错误的

2．主耶稣的事工

a．主来不是要灭人的性命《路加福音9:56a》

b．祂是要救人的性命《路加福音9:56b》

离开充满敌意的撒马利亚村

1．主耶稣宁愿走另一条路而不采取对抗的立场

2．这充滿敌意的村拒绝了主耶稣基督是他们的损失
