Text: Luke 9: 59-60
AN INVITATION TO BE A FOLLOWER
1. The Lord Jesus invited one person to follow Him.
“Follow Me.”
Luke 9:59a
a. What a privilege!
b. What an honour!
2. The man’s reply.
“Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
Luke 9:59b
a. This is an idiomatic expression.
b. His father had not died recently.
c. What he meant:
i. He cannot follow at this point of time.
ii. He will follow after his father had died.
iii. But when would his father die?
iv. He was saying, that he would not be following the Lord Jesus at this point of time.
3. The reply of the Lord Jesus.
“Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.”
Luke 9:60
a. There were those who were spiritually dead.
i. These would not respond to God.
ii. There were members in the family who were spiritually dead.
iii. They could look after the funerary details.
iv. The only person who was alive spiritually was this individual.
b. The challenge was to respond to the Call of the Lord Jesus.
i. He was invited to follow the Lord Jesus to learn as a Disciple.
ii. In time to come, he could be sent out to preach the kingdom of God.
iii. That would be the right focus for his life.
c. We are not told if the individual did make up his mind to follow the Lord Jesus.
