My Song In The Night (Vital Doctrines)
Text: Colossians 1:9
MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY
“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.”
Colossians 1:9
A PRAYER FOR THE COLOSSIANS I
1. The Apostle Paul was a man of prayer.
a. His prayers are worth studying.
b. There are many insights that are enlightening.
c. We can learn to pray better by studying how Paul prayed for people.
2. A quick review of the Colossians believers.
a. They had found faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. Their pastor had taught them much about what it means to be a Christian.
c. They had been able to grow a heart of love for others.
d. The Holy Spirit had obviously produced this fruit of love in their hearts.
e. The believers were growing well.
3. Paul’s response in prayer:
a. It was spontaneous.
b. The moment he was informed about the Colossians, he prayed for them.
c. Paul prayed ceaselessly for them too.
i. The word “ceaseless” does not mean non-stop praying.
ii. It means that Paul prayed for them faithfully and diligently.
4. A special focus in Paul’s prayer.
a. He prayed that the Colossians would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will.
b. This reminds us of an item in The Lord’s Prayer.
“Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:10
c. God’s will is not easily discerned:
i. There must be sufficient knowledge of God.
ii. It is in this knowledge we can discover His will.
d. Additionally:
i. There must also be wisdom.
ii. And spiritual understanding.
5. What is the role of prayer?
a. We acknowledge our need for God to teach us.
b. Only the Lord can reveal and give the needed wisdom and spiritual understanding.
c. Thus, we must ever seek God in prayer humbly to know His will.
d. If we do not know His will, we would not be able to fulfil it.
