MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY

“Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”

Colossians 2:15

PRINCIPALITIES AND POWERS

1. These words may refer to all who are in authority:

a. Human authority:
i. The Roman rulers.
ii. The Sanhedrin Council.
b. Spiritual authority:
i. Mighty angels.
ii. Powerful demons.

2. In this context there is mention of “disarming principalities and powers”.

a. Paul offers vital knowledge here.
b. The reference is to a great spiritual battle.
i. The Lord Jesus versus demons who possessed people.
The Lord Jesus overcame all demons!
ii. The Lord Jesus and Satan:
The Lord Jesus also overcame Satan!

3. The Devil’s power over mankind was through the use of fear.

a. When the Lord Jesus died and rose from the dead, He broke the Devil’s power.
b. Ponder this wonderful truth.

“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

Hebrews 2:14-15

4. The Lord Jesus has conquered all the evil principalities and powers:

a. Through His death and resurrection.
b. He has destroyed the power of the Evil One who has created a deep fear of death.
c. He has made a public spectacle of all opposing powers.
d. He has triumphed over all principalities and powers:
i. Human
ii. Spiritual
e. We may rejoice and live triumphantly through faith in the Lord Jesus
