Text: Galatians 2:14-15

MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION

“But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, ‘If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews? We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles.’”

Galatians 2:14-15

THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL

1. The Gospel of Truth

a. This must be proclaimed in its entirety.
b. This includes living out its truth.

2. Not straightforward

a. Peter lived as the Gentiles did in Antioch before the arrival of the Jews from Jerusalem.
b. When the Jews from Jerusalem arrived in Antioch for a visit, Peter removed himself from the company of the Gentiles.
c. In this, he was “not straightforward”; he was, in truth, “hypocritical”.

3. Public rebuke of the Apostle Peter.

a. Paul rebuked Peter for his misdeed.
b. Peter knew that he was wrong to behave as he did.

4. What was the significance of what Peter did?

a. He was virtually saying that the Jewish way of life was better than the Gentile one.
b. If the Gentile life was wrong or bad, then they must become like Jews.
c. This would mean that the Gentiles must live just like the Jews.
d. But this was not “the truth of the Gospel”.
e. Recalling what the Lord Jesus taught:

“I am the way, the truth and the life”

John 14:6

i. It is not the Jewish life nor the Gentile life.
ii. The truth of the gospel is to follow the Lord Jesus and to live as He did.

5. The Jews cannot compel the Gentiles to live the way they did.

a. Jews are by nature Jews.
b. Gentiles are also, by nature, Gentiles.
c. The truth of the gospel is not found in the lifestyle of the Jews.
d. Neither is the truth of the gospel found in the way of the Gentiles.

福音的真理

1. 真理的福音

a. 福音必须完全地被传扬

b. 这包括把真理活出来

2. 行得不正

a. 在耶路撒冷的犹太人到来之前，彼得与安提阿的外邦人一同生活

b. 但当耶路撒冷的犹太人来到安提阿拜访时，彼得却退去与外邦人隔开

c. 在这方面，彼得“行得不正”；事实上，他表现“虚伪”

3. 在众人面前责备使徒彼得

a. 保罗谴责彼得不正的行为

b. 彼得知道自己犯的错

4. 彼得的行为为何如此受责？

a. 他的行为表明他认为犹太人的生活方式比外邦人好

b. 若外邦人的生活不对，他们并该像犹太人一般的生活

c. 这表示外邦人应该跟随犹太人的生活方式

d. 但这并不合“福音的真理”

e. 回顾主耶稣的教导：

“我就是道路、真理、生命”

i. 并不是犹太人或外邦人的生活方式

ii. 福音的真理是跟随主耶稣并像祂一样生活

5. 犹太人不能勉强外邦人随犹太人的生活方式

a. 犹太人生来就是犹太人

b. 外邦人也生来就是外邦人

c. 福音的真理并不处在犹太人的生活方式中

d. 福音的真理也非在外邦人的生活方式中
