Text: Colossians 3: 5-7

MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY

“Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.”

Colossians 3:5-7

THE WRATH OF GOD

1. The wrath of God.

a. It is righteous.
b. It is to be feared.
c. It is God’s response to prevailing sinfulness.
d. It will fall upon those who are characterised by disobedience.
e. They are called “sons of disobedience”.

2. The call to put to death sins of the flesh.

a. Immorality
i. Wrong sexual inclinations.
ii. Uncleanness of thoughts and intentions.
b. Wickedness
i. Uncontrollable passion which is harmful.
ii. Evil and inordinate desire.
c. Worldliness
This is often seen in covetousness.
d. These may be:
i. Actual sins.
ii. Sinful tendencies.
e. The correct thing to do:
i. To put to death all these things.
ii. This the wisest thing to do.
iii. Sins would only lead to great harm.

3. The sinful past:

a. The Colossians were reminded of their sinful past.
b. They had walked in all these sinful ways.
c. Committing sin was almost a way of life.

4. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

a. There must be a clean break from the sinful past.
b. The heart and mind must be cleansed.
c. True faith in the Lord Jesus must cause one to live righteously.
