“Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man’s covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it.”

Galatians 3:15

THE NATURE OF A COVENANT

1. What is a “covenant?”

2. The Bible uses the word “covenant” significantly.

3. In this context, Paul was making a reference to a Covenant God gave to Abraham.

a. The Covenant was recorded in Genesis 15.

b. It was meant to be a Sacred Covenant.

c. God gave to Abraham a special and wonderful Covenant.

d. God has always honoured what He had promised to Abraham.

4. Paul sought to explain what “a man’s covenant” is:

a. It may be compared to “a legal document”.

b. Examples of such legal documents:

i. A marriage contract

ii. A business contract

iii. A treaty between two parties

5. Any legal human Covenant.

a. All the details of the Covenant are carefully studied and understood.

b. The details must be agreed upon by both parties.

c. There must be confirmation of the Covenant agreed upon.

d. All the things mentioned in the covenant become legally binding to the parties.

i. You cannot annul it.

ii. You cannot add to it.

e. Obviously, there will be a penalty imposed on anyone breaking the Covenant.
