Text: Galatians 4: 12-14
MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“Brethren, I urge you to become like me, for I became like you. You have not injured me at all. You know that because of physical infirmity I preached the gospel to you at the first. And my trial which was in my flesh you did not despise or reject, but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.”
Galatians 4:12-14
RECALLING THE HAPPY PAST
1. Paul recalled the time he came to Galatia.
a. He had a “physical infirmity”.
b. It was a trial in the flesh.
c. Paul was not specific as to what this infirmity was.
i. He probably had a health problem.
ii. He was likely not robust in health.
2. Preaching the Gospel.
a. Despite physical infirmity, Paul preached the Gospel to the Galatians.
b. The Galatians received the Gospel well.
3. A happy relationship.
a. The Galatians did not despise Paul because of his physical infirmity.
b. They did not reject him at all.
c. The Galatians had received Paul:
i. As if he was an angel of the Lord.
ii. As if he were the Lord Jesus Himself.
4. What had happened to this relationship?
a. Paul’s perspective:
i. He had not felt injured, even if they now ignored him.
ii. He still had good feelings towards the Galatians.
iii. He had understood them and thus “became like them”.
iv. He had identified with them so well.
b. Paul’s plea:
i. To ask the Galatians to be like him.
ii. To be open-hearted.
iii. To be understanding and kind.
