MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children— but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.”
Galatians 4:25-26
THE CITY OF JERUSALEM
1. The city of Jerusalem.
a. King David captured this city once controlled by Jebusites.
b. He made it the capital city of the kingdom of Israel.
c. Jerusalem also became the religious centre of the nation.
2. The Jerusalem in the days of the Lord Jesus.
a. The Lord Jesus wept over the city of Jerusalem (Matthew 23:37).
Jerusalem had always persecuted God’s faithful servants.
b. The Temple had become a “den of thieves” (Luke 19:46).
c. He prophesied the doom of the city (Matthew 24:2).
3. Historical Jerusalem in Paul’s theology.
a. Paul linked Hagar with Jerusalem in his days.
b. Hagar was Mount Sinai in Arabia (geographically).
c. Jerusalem was in bondage:
i. To sins.
ii. To wicked religious leaders who were unenlightened.
iii. It continued to cause people to be in bondage by teaching the law.
d. Children of bondage:
i. All who subscribed to the law continue in bondage.
ii. They are the children of Hagar.
iii. They remain slaves to sin and the law.
4. The theological Jerusalem.
a. Paul wrote about a Jerusalem from above.
b. This is the heavenly Jerusalem.
c. This Jerusalem embraces the following:
i. Grace and mercy of God.
ii. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that brings justification.
iii. The adoption of sons.
iv. Jerusalem is the mother (like Sarah).
v. All her children are free!
