MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“For it is written:“Rejoice, O barren, You who do not bear! Break forth and shout, You who are not in labour! For the desolate has many more children
Than she who has a husband.”Galatians 4:27
A PROPHECY FULFILLED
1. The Apostle Paul cited a prophetic text (Isaiah 54:1).
2. The Book of Isaiah
a. The bulk of Isaiah was about the problem of the many sins committed by Israel.
b. Because of its unrepentant spirit, Israel would be defeated by the Assyrians.
c. The country would suffer great sorrow because the nation was exiled.
d. What was needed was a special work of redemption.
3. Significance of Isaiah’s prophecy: Isaiah 53
a. The prophet wrote about the work of the Messiah (The Lord Jesus).
b. His was a work of redemption from sin.
c. The Saviour would have to undergo a great deal of suffering before redemption is possible.
d. The work of redemption was successfully done!
e. The Saviour is now able to offer salvation to all who would believe.
4. Significance of Isaiah’s prophecy: Isaiah 54
a. Paul only cited Isaiah 54:1.
b. The imagery of a woman who has been unable to bear children was employed:
i. The woman who is unable to bear children is often desolate.
ii. What would make her feel great joy?
iii. When she is able to have children!
c. Israel had suffered greatly because of its sinfulness.
d. But Israel is redeemed by the Messiah-Saviour.
e. Whoever has received redemption can experience great joy!
f. Israel may truly rejoice in the Lord Jesus as the great Redeemer!
i. The law cannot bring about redemption and joy.
ii. The Redeemer, the Lord Jesus can offer full redemption and with it, great joy.
