Text: Galatians 5:4
MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.”
Galatians 5:4
SEEKING TO BE JUSTIFIED BY LAW
1. The doctrine of Justification is very clearly taught by the Apostle Paul.
a. Justification is a gift from God, whereby a person obtains righteousness.
i. Out of the grace of God.
ii. Out of His mercy.
iii. Out of His love.
iv. Through the death of the Lord Jesus Christ at Calvary.
b. What it takes to receive Justification?
i. Recognition of sin.
ii. Repentance from sin.
iii. Receiving the Lord Jesus gratefully as our Saviour.
iv. Rejoicing in the salvation we have in the Lord!
2. Why do people respond to the teaching of Justification by keeping the Law?
a. Many are not humble enough to receive grace and mercy from God.
b. Many cannot accept that they are sinful in the sight of God.
c. Many think that they can merit salvation based on their good efforts.
d. The feeling of “self-righteousness” is very strong.
3. Two severe implications were highlighted:
a. “Estranged from Christ”
i. This means that the so-called believer is “separated from the Lord Jesus”.
ii. When a couple is said to be “estranged” it means that they are no longer together.
iii. This is the result when one seeks to be justified by the law.
b. The original Greek text is even stronger when taken literally.
i. It means that the individual, the so-called believer has spoken against the Lord Jesus Christ.
ii. This has even more serious implications!
4. Fallen from grace:
a. God has offered His grace and His salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ.
b. To seek to be justified by the law means that the individual has fallen away from this grace of God offered in mercy and love.
c. This is the second serious implication when a person seeks to be justified by the law.
