Important Insights About The Scriptures
Text: 2 Peter 1:19-21
“And so we have the prophetic word confirmed,
which you do well to take heed as a light that shines in a dark place,
until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,
for prophecy never came by the will of man,
but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
2 Peter 1:19-21
IMPORTANT INSIGHTS ABOUT THE SCRIPTURES
1. The Scriptures may be compared to “Light”
a. There is much darkness just before dawn.
b. Light comes at dawn.
c. The sun (called “the morning star”) slowly rises.
d. Finally, we have broad daylight.
2. The Scriptures bring enlightenment in a similar way
a. Darkness is slowly dispelled by the Word of Truth.
b. Truth is like light that shines in the darkness.
c. Fullness of understanding of the Scriptures is like the bright and happy sunshine.
3. The writers of the Scriptures
a. They are holy servants of God.
b. The Spirit of God moved their hearts to write what they have learned from the Lord.
c. No writer depends on his own private source of information.
d. No writer depends on his own personal wisdom to interpret the Scriptures.
HOW MAY WE RESPOND TO THE SCRIPTURES WELL?
Let us consider some of the responses made by the Psalmist who wrote Psalm 119. Four things may be highlighted.
1. Learn
“I will praise You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments.”
Psalm 119:7
2. Taking heed
“How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.”
Psalm 119:9
3. Hide God’s word in the heart
“Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.”
Psalm 119:11
4. Meditate
“I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways.”
Psalm 119:15
