Understanding The Context
Text: Matthew 4:1-4
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward, He was hungry.
Now when the tempter came to Him, he said,
‘If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.’
But He answered and said,
‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’’”
Matthew 4:1-4
UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEXT
Each time we read a Bible portion, we must always pay attention to the context. Here is a summary of the context.
1. The Lord Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Spirit of God.
2. He spent time alone so that He could prepare Himself for His public ministry.
3. He devoted forty days and nights in this preparatory period.
4. He fasted and prayed all this while.
5. God especially sustained Him during this special period.
THE DEVIL AS THE TEMPTER
1. He was allowed to test the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. He tried his best to tempt Jesus to do that which is wrong.
HOW DID THE LORD JESUS DEFEAT THE DEVIL?
1. Jesus’ answer to the Devil at all times.
“It is written.” Matthew 4:4, 7, 10
2. What does this mean?
a. Jesus obviously knew the Scriptures.
b. He was able to draw the following from His knowledge of the Scriptures:
i. Wisdom to discern what is right and what is wrong.
ii. Strength to do what is right.
iii. Courage to resist the Devil strongly.
WHAT ARE SOME LESSONS FOR US?
1. Get to know the Scriptures better.
2. Gain wisdom and understanding.
3. Apply the Scriptures effectively in life.
