Dear Friends of Jesus
Text: John 11: 1
DEAR FRIENDS OF JESUS
Jesus had won the hearts of many people. These became disciples. In time, they became fast friends.
“Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.”
John 11:1
1. “Bethany”
a. This was a town about three kilometres from Jerusalem.
b. Bethany means “A house of dates”.
c. The family was made up of Lazarus, Mary and Martha.
d. We are not informed as to who their parents were and if they were still alive.
2. In the home of the three siblings
a. The Gospel of Luke recorded a touching story of Jesus going to their home (Luke 10:38-42).
b. Martha busied herself preparing food for Jesus and His disciples.
c. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus to listen to the words of Jesus.
d. There developed a special bond of love between Jesus and the three siblings.
e. They had faith in Him and grew to love Him dearly.
f. They loved Him for His teachings and for the Person they knew Him to be.
3. “Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany”
a. John wrote this statement in this way for his readers who may not have known about their friendship.
b. “Lazarus of Bethany”
i. He had opened his home to Jesus and His disciples.
ii. It is possible that there were others who may have been with Him when He visited his home.
iii. It would have cost him quite a bit to feed the band of disciples.
iv. It is also possible that Lazarus had a home large enough to give accommodation to Jesus and His disciples.
c. Lazarus fell ill at this time.
4. Jesus was away in Jordan
a. Jesus was far away in Jordan at this point of time because of the death-threat the Jews had made against Him.
b. But everything was according to God’s plan.
