A Special Relationship
Text: John 11: 2
A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP
Jesus certainly had a strong relationship with His disciples as their Teacher and Lord. He also had deep and strong relationships with others. One such special relationship existed between Jesus and three siblings, Lazarus, Mary, and Martha (John 11:1).
“It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, ‘Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.’”
John 11:2-3
1. Mention of Mary and Martha
a. The Gospel of Luke mentioned the two sisters (Luke 10:38-42).
b. Martha fussed over the preparation of meals for Jesus out of love for Him.
c. Mary was just happy to sit at the feet of the Lord Jesus to learn from Him. This too was love expressed for the Lord.
2. “Mary who anointed the Lord”
a. John would write more about this later in his gospel (John 12:1-8).
b. A brief mention here:
i. She had anointed the Lord Jesus with fragrant oil.
ii. She had also wiped His feet with her hair.
iii. These were special expressions of her love for her beloved Teacher.
3. “Therefore the sisters sent to Him”
a. They probably sent a servant or a friend to inform Jesus that their brother was sick.
b. What was their hope, though not stated
i. That Jesus would come to be with them?
ii. That the company of a wonderful Teacher-Friend would be so comforting?
iii. That He would heal their beloved brother and make him well?
4. “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick”
a. This was an unusual message.
b. But it would have been natural and normal to those who understand the bond of love that had been stabled between the Lord and with the family.
c. It was their special privilege to be so dearly loved by the Lord.
d. He would understand the tender needs of the family in their hour of crisis.
