A Clear Declaration
Text: John 11: 25-27
A CLEAR DECLARATION
Jesus knew what Martha believed in. Her theology of the resurrection was sound. But the fact was that she could not bring herself to apply her faith in real life!
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe Me?’ She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.’”
John 11:25-27
1. “I am the resurrection and the life”
a. This was a bold and clear statement Jesus declared.
b. Did Martha understand what Jesus was saying to her?
2. “He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live”
a. The basic tenets of faith had to be reviewed.
b. There must be “belief” or “faith” in Jesus.
c. Death may come, but there is eternal life!
3. “Whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die”
a. Martha had grieved that her brother had died.
b. Her focus was this life on earth.
c. She could not grasp the fact that her brother was alive
i. In heaven.
ii. For all eternity.
iii. Why was there so much sorrow and grief as if this earthly life is everything God has to offer.
4. “Do you believe this”
a. This was a pointed question.
b. Martha had to face the fact that her understanding of life was very limited to life on earth!
5. “Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world”
a. This was an evasive answer at best.
b. This was not the question Jesus raised to her.
c. Her faith in Jesus was good and correct! But her understanding of eternal life was very limited.
She could not overcome the feeling that death seemed to be the victor!
