An Awkward Moment for Martha
Text: John 11: 28-29
AN AWKWARD MOMENT FOR MARTHA
This was an awkward moment for Martha. She knew that she could not fully grasp what Jesus was trying to say to her. She went away to look for Mary instead of talking to Jesus further.
“And when she had said these things, she went her way and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, ‘The Teacher has come and is calling for you.’
As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him.”John 11:28-29
1. “And when she had said these things”
a. Her understanding of the hope of the resurrection.
b. Her statement of faith concerning the identity of Jesus:
i. That He was the Christ.
ii. That He was the Son of God.
2. “She went her way and secretly called Mary her sister”
a. Martha had rushed to see Jesus.
b. She had not informed her sister that Jesus had come.
c. She wanted to speak to Jesus herself first.
3. “The Teacher has come”
a. Martha addressed Jesus as “Teacher”.
b. This was one of many titles that Jesus went by.
c. The reference to Jesus as Teacher may have arisen from her brief conversation with the Lord.
d. She knew that Jesus was trying to teach her.
e. But she could not fathom the lesson Jesus sought to impart.
4. “And is calling for you”
a. This may not have actually been stated.
b. But it is within reason that Jesus asked after Mary.
c. Thus, she said, “And is calling for you.”
5. “As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came to Him”
a. Of course, Mary rushed to see Jesus.
b. She loved her teacher.
c. She had sat at His feet and had listened most attentively when He taught her in her home.
