An Evil Response Noted
Text: John 11: 47-48
AN EVIL RESPONSE NOTED
Iniquity and evil are closely related. The decision of the Pharisees was incomprehensibly wicked.
“Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, ‘What shall we do? For this Man works many signs. If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him, and the Romans w6ll come and take away both our place and nation.’”
John 11:47-48
1. “Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council”
a. The Sanhedrin Council was made up of about 70 leaders.
b. The following groups were found in the Council:
i. Chief priests
ii. Scribes
iii. Lawyers
iv. Sadducees
v. Elders
vi. The High Priest
2. “And said, ‘What shall we do? For this Man works many signs’”
a. There was an open discussion.
b. It revolved around Jesus whom they regarded as a mere “Man”.
c. But they did take note: Jesus had performed many signs.
3. What the Council did not consider:
a. That Jesus could be the Messiah.
b. That He could be the Saviour sent by the LORD.
c. That what He had taught was true.
d. That they needed to find faith in Him.
4. “If we let Him alone like this, everyone will believe in Him”
They feared that all in Israel would come to faith in Jesus.
5. “And the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation”
a. This was an unfounded fear.
b. The Council feared that the Romans might find them inept and incompetent.
c. The Romans might even take away their nation! This was nothing more than wild imagination!
