Plotting to Kill Jesus
Text: John 11: 53-54
PLOTTING TO KILL JESUS
The desire to kill Jesus was noted in several places in the Gospel of John. Consider the list:
1. John 5:16
The Jews saw Jesus as a Sabbath breaker.
2. John 5:18
They saw Him as a blasphemer, who made Himself equal with God.
3. John 7:25
That the Jews wanted to kill Jesus was known to many.
4. John 8:37
Jesus confronted the Jews for wanting to kill Him.
INTENSITY OF PLOTTING TO KILL JESUS
After Caiaphas the high priest addressed the Council, the plot to kill Jesus became more intense.
“Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death. Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there remained with His disciples.”
John 11:53-54
1. “Then, from that day on, they plotted to put Him to death”
a. Originally, there was only a desire to kill Jesus.
b. But there had been no official endorsement from the high priest.
c. Now that the high priest, Caiaphas, had made his own feelings known, the plotting to kill Jesus became more intense.
2. “Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews”
a. This was a good and wise response.
b. His ministry would be hindered and hampered in every way by the Jews.
c. This signalled the end of His public ministry.
3. “But went from there into the country near the wilderness”
a. The phrase “into the country near the wilderness”
i. It is to be understood as a contrast to the city of Jerusalem.
ii. The Jews were city-dwellers and did not venture into any wilderness.
b. The wilderness would afford some measure of safety for Jesus and His disciples.
4. “To a city called Ephraim and there remained with His disciples”
a. The exact location of this city is not known.
b. It would still be in Judea, but perhaps several miles away from Jerusalem.
