The Passover of the Jews
Text: John 11: 55-57
THE PASSOVER OF THE JEWS
This was a sacred Feast of Israel. This was celebrated with the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. To the fastidious Jews there was a need to prepare themselves ritually.
“And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. Then they sought Jesus, and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, ‘What do you think – that He will not come to the feast?’ Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report it, that they might seize Him.”
John 11:55-57
1. The Passover was near
a. All devout believers would make every effort to go up to Jerusalem.
b. Many had indeed come from the country to celebrate Passover in Jerusalem.
2. Purification
a. All homes were searched and any trace of yeast would be removed.
b. This was part of the “purification” that all devout families would do.
3. Such a contradiction
a. The conscience of the Jews did not bother them.
That they were plotting to kill Jesus.
b. Yet they were seeking to purify themselves.
The purification of the heart was not their focus. Their focus was on fulfilling rituals.
4. The Jews
a. They gathered in the temple.
b. They were keeping a look-out for Jesus.
c. They were thinking aloud and wondering if Jesus was coming to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover.
5. A specific command given
a. This command came from members of the Sanhedrin Council.
i. The chief priests
ii. The Pharisees
b. If anyone knew where Jesus was, he must make a report to the Jews.
They were preparing to arrest Him.
