A Gentle Response
Text: John 12: 35
A GENTLE RESPONSE
Jesus did not want to engage in another long and unfruitful exchange of words with the crowd. He had explained who He was many times. But what He had said had not been understood. Another long explanation would not help them anyway.
“Then Jesus said to them, ‘A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where is going.’”
John 12:35
1. “Then Jesus said to them”
a. Jesus still cared enough to talk to the unbelieving crowd who followed Him.
b. They were certainly not following or serving Him in any way.
c. They were following Him to find fault with His teachings.
d. Nevertheless, Jesus still spoke gently to them.
2. “A little while longer the light is with you:
a. Jesus was that light.
b. He would be on earth for a little longer.
c. He was not going to use the short time He had left to waste it in arguments.
d. He had left sufficient light for them to guide them to the truth of who He truly was.
3. “Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you”
a. The light was to be found in the teachings Jesus had given.
b. The light was to be found in the miracles that He had performed.
c. The danger was to walk away from the light and to allow darkness to take over.
4. “He who walks in darkness does not know where he is going”
a. Darkness is expressed in so many ways.
b. Darkness can prevail.
i. Sin is well expressed in darkness.
ii. Unbelief is an expression of sin.
iii. Being fault-finding and quarrelsome strengthens the hold of darkness.
c. The individual then does not know where he is going.
i. Questions may be asked if one is truly seeking answers.
ii. Questions may also be spurious and directionless, when one is walking in darkness.
