A Moving Conversation
Text: John 13: 8-9
A MOVING CONVERSATION
Peter resisted the washing of his feet strenuously. He just could not bring himself to accept this humble act of his Teacher and Lord! This struggle between Teacher and Disciple was very moving.
“Peter said to Him, ‘You shall never wash my feet!’ Jesus answered him, ‘If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.’ Simon Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!’”
John 13:8-9
1. “Peter said to Him, ‘You shall never wash my feet’”
a. Peter resisted Jesus.
b. He did not understand what Jesus had just said to him.
i. About his present lack of understanding.
ii. The understanding will come later.
iii. Peter is to accept this act of humility from his Teacher and Lord!
c. Peter could not accept the explanation of Jesus.
2. “Jesus answered him”
a. This was said firmly but gently.
b. If Peter refused Jesus’ act, then he would have nothing more to do with Jesus.
c. His relationship with Jesus would end there and then.
3. Stunned by what Jesus said
a. He must have been stunned by what Jesus had just said.
b. How could he bear being separated from Jesus?
c. How could he carry on with life if Jesus would no longer be involved in his life?
4. “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head”
a. Peter obviously did not fully comprehend what Jesus was seeking to do.
b. But he knew what he wanted. He wanted to be a part of all Jesus had stood for!
i. He would have Jesus wash his hands and his head.
ii. Whatever Jesus wished to do, Peter would comply.
He could not bear the thought that Jesus would sever his relationship with him!
iii. Even if he did not fully understand what Jesus was seeking to do in washing the feet of His disciples.
