Fulfilment of Scripture
Text: John 13: 18-19
FULFILMENT OF SCRIPTURE
There are many reasons why we want to read the Scriptures. One of the most amazing things about Scripture is that the prophetic truths contained therein will be fulfilled.
“I do not speak concerning all of you, I know whom I have chosen; But that the Scripture might be fulfilled. ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, You may believe that I am He.
John 13:18-19
1. “I do not speak concerning all of you”
a. Not all the disciples would listen and take heed
b. Not all of them would be the Lord’s servant
c. Not all of them would apply this lesson on humility
2. “I know whom I have chosen”
a. Jesus knew that Judas would betray Him one day
b. Nevertheless, He had invited him to be among the Twelve
c. That was so very gracious of the Lord
3. “That the Scripture might be fulfilled”
a. This portion of Scripture
b. This was taken from Psalm 41:9
4. “He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.”
a. In Psalm 41:9 this person was described as a “friend”
b. Jesus offered Judas the hand of friendship
c. He had the privilege of eating with the Lord every day for three years
d. Yet he spurned the friendship Jesus extended to him
e. To lift up the heel against Jesus
i. This was nasty and rude
ii. It was wicked
5. “You may believe that I am He”
a. Jesus foretold the betrayal of Judas before it happened
b. The Disciples would in time come to believe in the Lord even more firmly
