No One Else Knew
Text: John 13: 28-30
NO ONE ELSE KNEW
Graciously, Jesus kept the identity of the betrayer secret from the rest of the Disciples. Only John knew that Judas would become the betrayer.
“But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him for some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, ‘Buy those things we need for the feast,’Or that he should give something to the poor. Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.”
John 13:28-30
1. “But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him”
a. The Disciples were not very discerning
b. They did not inquire further what Jesus said and meant
2. “For some thought, because Judas had the money box”
a. The Disciples took many things for granted
b. They assumed many things
3. Looking after the money box
a. Some people gave support to the Lord Jesus
b. The money was entrusted to Judas
4. Two possibilities
a. “Buy those things we need for the feast”
i. This was Passover time
ii. There would be things to purchase for the feast
b. “Or that he should give something to the poor”
i. It is likely that this was the practice of Jesus and His disciples
ii. They would not keep the money given to them for themselves
iii. There were many who were poor in the land
iv. To give to the poor would be typical of Jesus
5. “Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.”
a. Judas did not want to be in the company of Jesus and His disciples anymore.
b. It was night in more ways than one. Darkness had shrouded Judas’ soul and conscience.
