Saying a Fond Farewell
Text: John 13: 33
SAYING A FOND FAREWELL
This was a hard time for all the Disciples who were true to the Lord Jesus Christ. They had found faith in Him. They had also grown to love Him deeply. To say goodbye to loved ones is always painfully hard.
“Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ So now I say to you.
John 13:33
1. “Little children”
a. This is a phrase a teacher might use to speak to his pupils
b. This phrase is found in the singular in the Book of Proverbs: “My son” Proverbs 2:1
c. Jesus used this phrase:
i. Because He was their Teacher
ii. They were also His pupils or His “ sons”
iii. This was a term of tender affection
iv. He chose this phrase to say farewell to His beloved Disciples
2. “I shall be with you a little longer”
a. This was said with reference to His life on earth
b. His last day would be spent with His “little children”
3. “You will seek Me”
a. This would be natural
b. There will be a deep sense of missing the Lord Jesus
c. Naturally the heart and mind would seek Jesus
4. “As I said to the Jews”
a. “Where I am going, you cannot come”
i. In the case of the Jews, this was a reference to Heaven
ii. Because they had rejected Jesus, they cannot be with Him
b. “So now I say to you”
i. There was a slight alteration with reference to application
ii. This was a reference to His death and they cannot be with Him at that point of time
iii. But as far as Heaven is concerned, they will be with Jesus one day
This hope of heaven would be explained a little later (John 14)
