Seeking Clarification
Text: John 13: 36-37
SEEKING CLARIFICATION
Simon Peter loved the Lord Jesus as much as any of the other disciples. He was perturbed by what Jesus said about going to a place where the Disciples could not go. His heart was stirred, for deep down he felt he was able to follow Jesus, no matter where He went or how hard the path may be.
“Simon Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, where are You going?’ Jesus answered him, ‘Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.’”
John 13:36
1. Simon Peter
a. He was one of the earlier disciples of Jesus
b. The Lord had called him and his brother with James and John Matthew 4
c. He had never stopped following Jesus
i. He did not fully agree with what Jesus had just said
ii. He felt in his heart that he would go with Jesus anywhere and everywhere
2. “Lord, where are You going?”
a. This was a pointed question
b. He wanted Jesus to be very specific
c. What exactly did Jesus mean?
d. Where was He going that the Disciples could not go?
3. “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now”
a. Jesus was just as clear and specific
b. He knew His disciples better than they knew themselves
c. But He did not explain further where He was going
d. In fact, He had already told them a number of times on earlier occasions
i. He would be betrayed
ii. He would suffer many things under the chief priests and scribes
iii. He would be lifted up on the cross
iv. He would die as the Lamb of God for the sins of the world
4. “But you shall follow Me afterward”
There will come a time when the Disciples would also be asked to suffer for the Lord and to die for their faith. But they were not ready at this point of time. Their faith and courage were not strong enough yet!
