Love for the Lord Jesus Christ
Text: John 14: 15 -16
LOVE FOR THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
The Disciples of the Lord Jesus must have learned to love their Teacher deeply. He had given them His love and friendship. He had taught them deep and wonderful lessons of God, faith, and life. He had shown His love for them in numerous ways. He addressed the issue of their love for Him.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, That He may abide with you forever.”
John 14:15-16
1. The love of the Lord
a. Jesus had first shown His love for His Disciples
b. He had loved them from the beginning to the end John 13:1
c. He had proven His love over and over again
2. “If you love Me, keep My commandments”
a. Jesus did not take for granted that His Disciples would love Him
b. Love for the Lord Jesus must also be carefully examined
c. Jesus explained a special expression of love for Him
i. Love is not a matter of emotions
ii. Love for Him is best evidenced in the keeping of His commandments (teaching.
iii. This would be a wonderful gauge of a true love for the Lord
3. “And I will pray the Father”
a. Jesus will pray to His Father
b. He is the Perfect example of how to pray
i. He prayed with love for His Father
ii. He prayed with His will in mind
iii. He was confident His Father hears His prayers always
4. “And He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever”
a. The word “Helper” is a reference to the Holy Spirit
b. He will be sent to assist all believers after Jesus has returned to the Father
c. Jesus’ ministry on earth was limited by time
d. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit will abide as our Helper forever
e. Jesus knew that His Disciples would need Divine help in their life and ministry
