A Brief Explanation of the Holy Spirit
Text: John 14: 17 - 18
A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Jesus went on to explain more about the Holy Spirit. The Disciples did not have a whole lot of knowledge about the Spirit of God at that time.
“The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; But you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”
John 14:17-18
1. The Spirit of truth
a. He was first introduced as “The Helper” or “The Comforter”
b. He is well-described as “The Spirit of truth”
c. He cannot be associated with anything that is untrue or false
2. The world
a. This is not a reference to the physical earth
b. It is a reference to mankind
c. And mankind is made up of:
i. Those who believe in God through the Lord Jesus Christ
ii. Those who do not believe in God at all
d. Jesus was referring to those who reject God
3. The unbelieving world
a. It cannot see Him (the Holy Spirit)
b. It does not know Him
c. It cannot know Him except through faith in the Lord Jesus
4. “But you know Him”
a. The Disciples knew that the Spirit of God was upon Jesus Luke 4:18-19
b. They had some knowledge of the Person and Power of the Holy Spirit anointing Jesus for ministry
5. “For He dwells with you and will be in you”
a. The Presence of the Holy Spirit was with Jesus and His Disciples
b. This was a precious promise of the indwelling of the Spirit of God in all believers
6. “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you”
The Disciples need not feel that they are like orphans. The Lord Jesus will come to them.
