The Third Aspect Of Abiding
Text: John 15: 9
THE THIRD ASPECT OF ABIDING
The concept of “abiding” has at least three aspects. One must first learn to abide in Jesus. Then one must learn how to abide in His word. The third aspect is explained here. One must learn to abide in His love.
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.”
John 15:9
1. “As the Father loved Me”
a. Love is not a mere feeling we possess.
b. The love Jesus spoke about begins with an understanding of God’s love.
c. Jesus wonderfully experienced God’s love.
i. God sent an angelic choir to sing at the birth of Jesus.
ii. He sent a star to guide some Wise Men to see Him.
iii. God openly declared that He was pleased with His Son Jesus at His baptism.
iv. He was there to protect Him when He was tempted by Satan.
v. He sent His angels to minister to Him after the Temptations.
vi. God heard and answered all His prayers.
d. Jesus was thus able to say joyously that His Father loved Him.
2. “I also have loved you”
a. As the Father had loved Jesus.
b. In the same manner He loved His Disciples.
i. He had befriended them.
ii. He had taught them.
iii. He had honoured them by making them Apostles.
iv. He had loved them from the beginning to the end.
3. “Abide in My love”
a. The Disciples must learn how to appreciate the love of Jesus shown to them.
b. They must not take His love for granted.
c. They must choose to abide in His love
i. By abiding in Jesus.
ii. By abiding in His word.
Abiding in Jesus must be consciously and carefully practised, gratefully and humbly.
