Deep Truths
Text: John 16: 7
DEEP TRUTHS
It was important for the Disciples to go deeper in their understanding of the truth. A shallow comprehension would not help very much to cope with deep sorrow.
“Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; For if I do not go away, the Helper would not come to you; But if I depart, I will send Him to you.”
John 16:7
1. “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth”
a. Jesus was deeply committed to teaching the truth.
b. From the first day to the last, He would always be speaking only of things that are true.
2. “It is to your advantage that I go away”
a. This was a deep truth that the Disciples must seek to comprehend.
b. The departure of Jesus is not to their disadvantage.
c. His departure would be to their advantage in the final analysis.
3. “For If I do not go away, the Helper would not come to you”
a. Jesus used this line of reasoning to help the Disciples comprehend this deep truth
i. If Jesus did not depart.
ii. Then the Helper, the Holy Spirit would not come.
b. There was a profound Divine Plan of God.
c. The Divine Plan of God must be carefully understood.
i. The role for Jesus was to lay down His life to save the world from being judged for its sinfulness.
His role was of critical importance.
ii. The role of the Holy Spirit would only begin after Jesus had fulfilled His role as Saviour.
d. This Divine Plan must be:
i. Understood
ii. Accepted
iii. Believed in thoroughly
4. “But if I depart, I will send Him to you”
a. When Jesus had completed His part, He would return to His original place in Heaven.
b. From Heaven He would send the Holy Spirit to be our Helper.
c. This was a deep and wonderful truth that must gladden the heart of the Disciples.
