An Encouragement To Pray
Text: John 16: 23 - 24
AN ENCOURAGEMENT TO PRAY
Jesus was given to prayer. He would begin each day in prayer. He would set aside time to pray in the evening too. However, the Disciples had not yet mastered the spiritual discipline of prayer.
“And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that you joy may be full.”
John 16:23-24
1. “And in that day”
a. This is a reference to the day they will see Jesus after His resurrection.
b. Their hearts would be filled with special joy.
2. “You will ask Me nothing”
a. They would be so filled with joy they do not pray.
b. Jesus was pointing out an important truth.
c. The Disciples were not given to prayer as they should.
3. “Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you”
a. Jesus once again sought to give much assurance.
b. “Whatever you ask the Father”
i. Prayers are to be directed to the Father.
ii. There was every encouragement to strengthen their prayer life.
c. “In My name”
i. The name of Jesus is most significant.
ii. The Father will grant prayers made in the name of Jesus if it is within His holy will.
4. “Until now you have asked nothing in My name”
a. Prayer was not a strong part of the life of the Disciples yet.
b. They had not asked anything in the name of Jesus at all.
5. “Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full”
a. We are reminded of what Jesus taught His Disciples earlier (Matthew 7:7-8).
b. But the Disciples had not yet learned how to be truly prayerful.
c. If they really desire to have fulness of joy, they must learn to deepen their prayer life.
d. Learning to pray humbly to the Father in the name of Jesus must be practised diligently.
