A Gentle Word Of Warning
Text: John 16: 31 - 33
A GENTLE WORD OF WARNING
Jesus knew His Disciples better than themselves. He heard their words graciously but gave them a gentle word of warning.
“Jesus answered them, ‘Do you now believe? Indeed the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.’”
John 16:31-33
1. “Jesus answered then, ‘Do you now believe?’”
a. Jesus helped the Disciples to think more deeply.
b. They may feel that they have fully understood but that might be presumptuous.
2. “Indeed, the hour is coming, yes, has now come, that you will be scattered, each to his own”
a. Jesus was warning them of a grim reality.
b. Soon the Disciples would be scattered.
c. Each one would be seeking to fend for himself.
3. “And will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me”
a. The Disciples would abandon Him.
b. But He would not be alone.
c. The Presence of the Father would be felt wonderfully.
4. “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace”
a. These truths would strengthen and keep the Disciples.
b. In Christ there would be great peace.
5. “In the world you will have tribulation”
a. Jesus had experienced so much hostility.
b. Faith in Jesus would enable the believer to be unafraid.
6. “But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”
a. The Disciples do not need to give in to feelings of despair.
b. They can trust in the Lord Jesus for He has truly overcome the world.
