A Deeply Meaningful Prayer-Life
Text: John 17: 1
A DEEPLY MEANINGFUL PRAYER-LIFE
Jesus was always noted by the Gospel writers as One who prayed faithfully.
1. Early in the morning Mark 1:35
2. Sometimes He prayed all night Luke 6:12
3. He also prayed spontaneously John 11:41-42
4. He prayed in difficult times Matthew 26:36-46
HE TAUGHT HIS DISCIPLES HOW TO PRAY
Jesus also taught His Disciples how to pray (Matthew 6:5-13; Luke 11:1-4). The challenge to the Disciples was to learn how to pray meaningfully.
A SPECIAL PRAYER OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
John recorded a prayer of the Lord Jesus. There is so much to learn from the way Jesus prayed.
“Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: ‘Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You.’”
John 17:1
1. How Jesus prayed
a. He lifted up His eyes to heaven.
b. Heaven is where God the Father is.
c. This described His consciousness and His focus.
2. “Father, the hour has come”
a. Jesus addressed God with deep affection.
b. The most precious of terms was also the simplest, “Father”.
c. “The hour”
i. It simply means, “The time”.
ii. Translating it: “The time has come”.
iii. This is a reference to the hour of His death.
3. “Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You”
a. The focus of Jesus was to seek to bring glory to God.
b. Throughout His life, He had sought to bring glory to His Father.
c. The death that Jesus would experience was going to be very cruel and painful.
d. He asked that He might bring glory to the Father in the way He faced His suffering and death.
e. The focus of glorifying God is truly most admirable.
