Glorifying God
Text: John 17: 4- 5
GLORIFYING GOD
Jesus had always aspired to bring glory to His beloved Father. He succeeded to do that all His life.
“I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.”
John 17:4-5
1. “I have glorified You on the earth”
a. Jesus could say these words with all honesty.
b. He had never sought His own personal glory at any time.
2. “I have finished the work which You have given Me to do”
a. The work of God for Jesus was prophesied in the Scriptures.
i. To be a Light to Israel who lived in darkness (Isaiah 9).
ii. To be God’s faithful Servant (Isaiah 42, 49, 61).
b. Jesus had truly finished all that God had entrusted Him to do.
i. Nobody else can say these words in complete honesty.
ii. Thank God for a wonderful example that Jesus had set.
3. “And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself”
a. Only Jesus could make this request.
b. Only He who is perfect can say these words.
c. Jesus asked to be given the same glory as what the Father has.
4. “With the glory which I had with You before the world was”
a. Jesus was speaking of His eternal existence.
b. Before He became Man, He was already in existence.
c. This glory would include the following ideas:
i. The glory of being Co-Creator.
ii. The glory of Godhood.
iii. The glory that is fully glorious and pure.
iv. The glory that Jesus had to empty Himself of when He became Man.
d. This prayer can only be made by Jesus.
e. We cannot say these words when we pray!
