Prayer For The Disciples To Be Kept
Text: John 17: 11
PRAYER FOR THE DISCIPLES TO BE KEPT
Jesus loved and cared for His Disciples! When He was on earth, He protected and kept them. But now that He was leaving the earth, He prayed that they might be kept!
“Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me,
that they may be one as We are.”John 17:11
1. “Now I am no longer in the world”
a. Jesus was with His Disciples still.
b. He was looking at the future.
c. He spoke of the future as the present.
2. “But these are in the world, and I come to You”
a. Jesus would return to the Father.
b. But the Disciples would continue to remain in the world.
3. “Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me”
a. “Holy Father”
i. This was an expression of great affection.
ii. This was an expression of great trust too.
b. “Keep through Your name”
i. Jesus trusted in the name of His Father (Exodus 34:5-7).
ii. God will always honour His own name.
iii. He will fulfil all that He has promised.
c. “To keep”
i. To protect
ii. To guard
iii. To keep safe from the world and the Evil One
4. “That they may be one as We are”
a. Oneness is what Jesus enjoyed with His Father.
b. Jesus was concerned that His Disciples were not well-united.
c. If that sense of oneness is not protected and kept, much could be lost.
d. This was a deep and insightful prayer of the Lord Jesus Christ.
