Text: John 18: 5 -7
TAKEN ABACK
The contingent sent by the chief priests and Pharisees did not expect Jesus to be so calm and composed. They had brought weapons thinking that He and His Disciples would violently resist. They were so wrong!
“They answered Him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ Jesus said to them, ‘I am He.’ And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, ‘I am He,’ they drew back and fell to the ground. Then He asked them again, ‘Whom are you seeking?’ And they said, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’”
John 18:5-7
1. “They answered Him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ Jesus said to them, ‘I am He’”
a. The group had come for Jesus of Nazareth.
b. Jesus simply and openly identified Himself to His enemies.
2. “And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them”
a. Judas had changed sides obviously.
b. He was now standing with the group sent by the chief priests and Pharisees.
i. This was an obvious betrayal.
ii. He was now siding the group of people sent by the chief priests and Pharisees.
iii. All that he had been taught was not remembered.
iv. The love and friendship with Jesus and his fellow-disciples had been set aside.
3. “Now when He said to them, ‘I am He,’ they drew back and fell to the ground”
a. Jesus identifying Himself in this manner confused the enemies.
b. They were absolutely stunned.
i. They withdrew.
ii. They stumbled over one another.
iii. They actually fell to the ground in shock.
4. “Then He asked them again, ‘Whom are you seeking?’ And they said, ‘Jesus of Nazareth’”
a. Once again, Jesus asked them “Whom are you seeking?”
b. And the answer was also repeated, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
