Text: John 18: 15 -16

FOLLOWING CLOSE BEHIND

The Disciples had fled from their Master, the Lord Jesus Christ. Peter and John sought to follow Jesus as closely as they dared.

“And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest. But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.” 

John 18:15-16

1. “And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple”

a. Simon Peter was named.

b. “Another disciple” was John, the gospel writer.

c. He did not identify himself for reasons of modesty.

2. “Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest”

a. John’s family had connections.

b. He was known to the high priest.

c. Thus, he was able to follow Jesus into the courtyard of Annas, the former high priest.

d. He was called “the high priest” largely because of his influence.

e. The high priestly office had been so dominated by Annas that many still spoke of him as “the high priest”.

f. In this text, John also followed popular thinking. He called Annas the high priest.

3. “But Peter stood at the door outside”

a. Peter and his family may not have been as well connected as John and his family.

b. He was not permitted to enter into the courtyard of the high priest (Annas).

c. He stood outside the compounds of the high priest.

4. “Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in”

a. John, because he was known to the high priest, was able to enter into the courtyard.

b. He went to the doorkeeper who was a woman.

c. He was able to have permission from the doorkeeper to have Peter enter into the courtyard of Annas.

d. Peter’s heart was bitterly torn. The sudden turn of events left him floundering and uncertain.

门徒们都逃离了他们的夫子，主基督耶稣。只有彼得与约翰胆敢紧跟着耶稣。

“西门彼得跟着耶稣，还有一个门徒跟着。那门徒是大祭司所认识的，他就同耶稣进了大祭司的院子，彼得却站在门外。大祭司所认识的那个门徒出来，和看门的使女说了一声，就领彼得进去。”

1. “西门彼得跟着耶稣，还有一个门徒跟着”

a. 西门彼得的名被指出

b. “还有一个门徒”便是写福音的作者，约翰

c. 他是因谦虚所以没有表明自己的身份

2. “那门徒是大祭司所认识的，他就同耶稣进了大祭司的院子”

a. 约翰的家庭有好些能起影响力的关系

b. 大祭司认识他

c. 因此，他能够同耶稣进入前任大祭司亚那的院子

d. 亚那被称为“大祭司”因为他拥有势力

e. 亚那在大祭司的职位上还是占了主导的地位，以致就算他已退位，人们仍把他视为“大祭司”

f. 在这经节中，约翰也跟着这普遍的趋势，把亚那称为大祭司

3. “彼得却站在门外”

a. 彼得与家人或许不像约翰的家庭那么有背景

b. 他不被批准进入大祭司（亚那）的院子

c. 他站在大祭司院子的门外

4. “大祭司所认识的那个门徒出来，和看门的使女说了一声，就领彼得进去。”

a. 因为约翰认识大祭司，所以能够进入院子

b. 他向看门的使女说了一声

c. 他得到看门的使女的允许，让彼得进入了亚那的院子

d. 彼得心中痛苦难受。这些突如其来的事情令他不知所措且起疑惑。
