Failure Of Annas
Text: John 18: 24
FAILURE OF ANNAS
Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas realised that he could not force anything out of Jesus. He had failed in his attempt to extract information. He had failed to cause Jesus to incriminate Himself.
The uncalled-for action of the officer of the temple guards made the situation even more problematic. He could not cause Jesus to be beaten further. He might be queried by people in the Sanhedrin Council who were sympathetic to Jesus!
CAIAPHAS THE HIGH PRIEST
Annas decided that he would send Jesus to be examined by Caiaphas, the true High Priest in those days.
“Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.”
John 18:24
1. Understanding the religious hierarchy of Israel
a. Caiaphas was called “the high priest”.
b. He presided over all the priests of the Temple in Jerusalem.
c. He also presided over what was called The Sanhedrin Council (highest religious office).
2. The Temple Ministry
a. There were many activities:
i. All major religious feasts were conducted at the Temple.
ii. Many would go to Jerusalem to celebrate these feasts.
iii. On this occasion, many came to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.
iv. And for the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
b. The Temple priests
i. They looked after the religious ceremonies.
ii. They helped the worshippers with all the rituals.
c. Some questionable activities were conducted by the Temple priests.
d. The creation of a Temple tax:
i. Temple currency was created.
ii. This was not legal currency as such.
iii. Worshippers were forced to purchase Temple currency to give as an offering.
e. There were money changers in the Temple precincts.
They made a lot of money from worshippers!
f. The buying and selling of animals for sacrifices.
i. Worshippers had to buy animals for sacrifice from the Temple.
ii. They were fleeced by those in charge.
