The Trial Before Pontus Pilate
Text: John 18: 28
THE TRIAL BEFORE PONTIUS PILATE
The Romans ruled the Middle East in those days. This would include Judea and Syria. The Roman governor was a man called Pontius Pilate.
“Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.”
John 18:28
1. “Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas”
a. This brief trial was mentioned in Luke 22:66-71.
b. The trial was swiftly concluded.
c. They led Jesus to the Praetorium.
2. “The Praetorium”
a. This word was derived from the word “praetor” (a Roman magistrate).
b. His courtroom was called a praetorium.
3. “And it was early morning”
a. Jesus was brought to the praetorium of Pilate very early.
b. The Governor must answer all urgent calls, regardless of the time of day.
4. “But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled”
a. Before the Passover all homes must be cleansed from leaven.
b. A Gentile home or residence or even a court room may contain leaven.
c. The place would then be considered unclean.
d. If they were to step into the residence of the governor they could risk being “defiled”.
5. “But that they might eat the Passover”
a. This was a major religious feast.
b. Much effort is put in to ensure that the Passover is kept properly.
c. Thus, they would not enter into the Praetorium.
THE IRONY OF IT ALL
The Sanhedrin Council had done many things improperly and illegally. But their conscience was not defiled! But if they were to enter the Praetorium they might be defiled!
1. Jesus was struck for no reason.
2. There was no real trial but they had determined that Jesus was guilty and worthy of death!
