Presenting Jesus To The Hostile Jews
Text: John 19: 5 - 6
PRESENTING JESUS TO THE HOSTILE JEWS
Pilate brought Jesus to the Jews. He probably hoped that once they saw Jesus after He was beaten, they would relent and not pursue the matter further.
“Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, ‘Behold the Man!’ Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, ‘Crucify Him, crucify Him!’ Pilate said to them, ‘You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.’”
John 19:5-6
1. “Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe”
a. It was a very sad picture.
b. The crown of thorns would have caused some bleeding in the head.
c. The purple robe would have been ragged, old and dirty .
2. “Behold, the Man”
a. Pilate perhaps tried to assure the Jews that they had nothing to fear from Jesus.
b. He was just an ordinary Man from what he had been able to observe.
3. “Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him”
a. The very sight of Jesus angered the Jews.
b. Two groups were mentioned:
i. The chief priests.
ii. The officers were probably temple guards.
iii. They were there to protect the chief priests just in case the disciples of Jesus attacked them.
4. “Crucify Him, crucify Him”
a. These words must have been shouted out.
b. These words represented:
i. Hostility
ii. Vengefulness
iii. Hatred
5. “You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him”
a. This was the third declaration from Pilate that Jesus had not been found to be at fault in any way.
b. If the Jews wanted to crucify Jesus so badly, then they must do this wicked deed by themselves.
